Maybe you want to make sure you don't hire the wrong candidate because the firing was an accident, or maybe you're worried about making a bad impression.First, let's examine what you need to do to prepare a great resume. Here are the four main elements you need to include in a job description: job title, the job description, the duties and qualifications of the position you're applying for, and lastly, your education, if any. These are the essential pieces of a resume that you're looking for, and if you're prepared you won't need to worry about sending out resumes and answering interview questions. This job description includes everything about your job and your qualifications.As a rule of thumb, though, you're going to include your first and last name, and the job description in the firs t person singular form. This doesn't mean you shouldn't use 'we'us' in the job description or title, as long as the key words and their sentences (in the appropriate order) are included in your job description.Now the job description of your resume is the meat of your job description. Here are a few pieces of advice you should use to make sure your resume is properly written and worthy of consideration for an employer. Domestic Violence Victims Are Gaining New Rights at Work Kristen Paruginog held two jobs during the four years she was in an abusive relationship, but neither offered a respite from her tumultuous home life. Paruginog’s abuser called her office constantly and sent harassing text messages if she didn’t pick up the phone. Once, he showed up unannounced, locked her in his car, and drove off in the middle of the day. “The entire office knew I was the girl with the abusive boyfriend,” she says. “That’s what I was known for.” If Paruginog’s employer had a policy for handling domestic violence, or any victim resources, no one told her about them. Except for one brief, uncomfortable conversation with a supervisor â€" prompted by her then-partner’s arrest on work property â€" the abuse never even came up. Much has changed in the years since Paruginog left that job, and that boyfriend. On Monday, New York City mayor Bill De Blasio signed a bill expanding the city’s paid sick leave laws to include “safe time” for domestic violence. It joins cities like San Francisco and Minneapolis, and states like California and Washington, that guarantee paid time off for victims to meet with law enforcement, move away from an abuser, and arrange for other potentially life-saving services. The New York bill is one of the most progressive laws to date, extending protections to victims of sexual assault, and stalking. A 2017 survey from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans found that about 42% of U.S. employers don’t offer paid domestic violence leave, and another 19% said they’re “not sure” if they would cover it. That means more than half of U.S. employers don’t guarantee paid safe time, or haven’t formalized it into company policy. It’s not that companies are against giving employees time off for domestic violence services, experts say. By and large, if an employer has paid sick leave, they’ll let workers use it for “safe time.” But domestic violence is inherently isolating â€" unless a company is facing an incident directly, it’s likely unaware of how these situations impact its workers. “The sad reason some companies start to think about it is because they had someone who died because of domestic violence,” says Kim Wells, executive director of the Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence, which helps companies create domestic leave policies and trainings. “Most have never thought about this as a preventative measure.” But more policies are slated to help victims in the upcoming year. The national push to federally mandate paid sick leave, led by a congressional bill re-introduced by Connecticut Representative Rosa DeLauro and Washington Senator Patty Murray in March, lists DV as a central tenet. But that kind of sweeping legislation is unlikely to pass, leaving reforms up to cities and states. In 2018, Washington and Nevada will join six other states with domestic violence policies on the books (Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Oregon, and Vermont). As more of these policies roll out, advocates say, the roughly 1.3 million American women who experience domestic violence annually will have an easier time getting back on their feet. Victims of “severe intimate partner violence” lose the equivalent of more than 32,000 full-time jobs each year as a direct result of the abuse, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Paid leave gives them the time and space to turn their lives around without worrying if their jobs are at stake. Seabrook, general counsel of the Washington, D.C. nonprofit, Futures Without Violence. “If a survivor knows she’s supported in her workplace, and has the ability to take time off to go to the hospital, get a restraining order, and do whatever else she needs to, she’s going to be a better, more productive worker.” For now, there are plenty of kinks to iron out. Laws vary by locality, so many employer policies that do exist are clunky and convoluted. For example, some companies with multiple locations specify that only employees in certain locations are guaranteed domestic violence leave, or allude to laws that “may provide time away” for domestic violence victims. For states that don’t have domestic violence policies on the books, particularly those with disproportionately high rates of domestic violence, like Tennessee and Louisiana, this further muddles what resources are available for victims of abuse. Disclosure is another gray area. While most safe time laws, like their sick leave counterparts, prohibit companies from requiring employees to disclose the reason for absence, they do allow companies to ask for a note from a medical provider to prove there is a valid reason for the leave â€" a barrier some victims, who may be too embarrassed or scared to talk to a doctor, aren’t willing to cross. Still, it’s clear workplace complacency is changing. An outpouring of support for victims of assault, instigated recently by reports of alleged abuse from Harvey Weinstein, Bill O’Reilly, and Roger Ailes, and underscored by stories shared through hashtags like #metoo, have sparked a national conversation about how powerful men manipulate, subjugate, and harass women. Soon, advocates say, this could be the catalyst for national change. “The workplace should be a community of support, and intervention,” Seabrook says. “The law that’s enacted is the floor. We encourage employers to be the ceiling.”

When youre writing a resume, you need to prepare for this fact of the modern job search. Plus, an online application will probably be one of dozenspossibly hundredssubmitted. Always rememberyour resume is a professional document, but it is also a marketing tool. You are trying to sell yourself and your skills to an employer. Who would you rather hire? Use strong, persuasive writing and plenty of action verbs to convince them and get the interview you want.Change Your Resume FormatEspecially if You Have Employment GapsYour current employer is probably already well aware of your employment gaps, and if they arent, they wont be as worried about them as an outside employer because they know your abilities and your current dedication to the job. However, employment gaps can be a red flag to a company that isnt as familiar with you. To secure an outside interview, you need a prospective employer to have a level of confidence in your reliability, along with their interest in your skills and experience.If your resume is currently in the chronological format, listing out jobs and positions in bestellung by date, it is unfortunately emphasizing any employment gaps that you have in your past. To have a better chance at getting an outside interview, consider changing your resume to one in the functional format st yle.A functional format resume groups your work history by related skills, strengths, and accomplishments, showing your value without an exact timeline of your career. Your resume is also a demonstration of your communication ability and your approach to executing work.If you dont have time to do anything else with your resume, make sure to proofread itat least twice. If you have the time to spend on your resume, make the extra effort to revise it and perhaps reformat it after youve done a first (or even second) draft. A second (or third) look is always a good ideayou never know what inspiratio n might strike after youve let your resume sit for a couple of days, or what input a trusted colleague may have if you take the time to send it over to them for their thoughts. With projects at stages from early prototype to machines for manufacture, they shared solutions to problems in healthcare, small-scale energy production, agriculture and food storage, and barriers faced by people with disabilities.One of the three winning teams at the ASME ISHOW Kenya, held May 9-11 at the Azure Hotel, was from the Dutch company, SimGas, which is developing a milk chiller powered by biogas. SimGas systems allow rural households in developing regions to generate clean fuel and fertilizer from manure. SimGass Biogas Milk Chiller is designed to prevent spoilage when small-scale, off-grid dairy farmers store milk overnight before delivering it to local processors. With these farmers, we want to learn a bit more about the payment model and also about the entire cooling chain the cooling of the milk all the way from the farmer to the processor. You have to keep it cold all along the way. Then we want to learn more about how we can move to mass manufacturing.Weve put a lot of dedication and sacrifice into designing our hardware, and we are really grateful for this recognition, said Ishmael Hezekiah, chief operating officer of Bentos Energy. Bentos makes and distributes low-cost, smokeless charcoal briquettes from waste materials and biomass, including water hyacinth, an invasive plant species. Heze kiah and his team at Bentos are proud they can provide jobs, reduce landfill, and cut air pollution. Bentos reports there is a monthly demand for 200,000 bags of their briquettes in Kenya, but the company needs to buy equipment to generate that output. We are really excited to come through the process and at the end of it to be winners, said George Chege, an agricultural engineer who is developing an environmental controller that monitors ch icken coops. It helps reassure us that what we are working on is valid and can actually change the world in its own simple way.Chege and his geschftsleben partner, William Muthoka, teamed up several years ago to raise chicks, something they thought would be relatively easy. Instead, they discovered regulating temperature was important and difficult, requiring 400 a.m. trips to the coop. They developed Smart Brooder to automate the process. The team believes their product will help young people find work and that it will help farmers shift from charcoal to electricity and cleaner sources of energy.
