4 Habits That Kill Career Potential The harder a habit is to acquire, the greater the reward that stems from acquiring that behavior. Rarely is the acquisition of desirable traits or the culmination of a successful career happenstance. Regardless of popular consensus, most individuals are not born with immense abilities. Rather, the actions a person takes and how often they engage in those habits will either propel or completely diminish abilities. On the flip side, harmful habits are easy to acquire, yet hard to live with. Below, the recruiters at KAS have listed 4 habits that kill career potential. 1. Failing to take a sincere interest in others. The most effective way anyone can make themselves appear interesting is to take a sincere interest in what matters to the other person. Evidence has shown that the overwhelming majority of earthâs inhabitants is more interested in his or her own name more than any other name on this planet. This is not to mention that they are significantly more concerned in themselves, their problems and aspirations than they are you or anybody else for that matter. While each person is different in a myriad of ways, one thing that each individual who walks this earth has in common is that they strive to feel important. Part of making them feel important is listening a simple, yet seemingly less frequently used tactic than years prior. As a matter of fact, many people fail to make a great first impression because they donât listen intently and interrupt, thus not making the individual feel as if they matter. Regardless of how much formal education a person has had, excessive talking about themselves or interrupting all but renders even the most prestigious diploma worth next to nothing. 2. Folding during tough times. Opportunity doesnât seek us nor does it only happen once in a lifetime. All too often, individuals quit or continually postpone crucial work due to a particular account or relationship going as they wish it had. Consistently, life furnishes the opportunity to improve. Any procrastination (or complete inaction) when times to better oneâs situation present themselves, because of past failures forfeits any chance for success and allows another party to win. Character is not built when things go a personâs way. Rather, they are formed when even the biggest of problems present themselves. 3. Failing to engage in critical reading. Weâve all heard the phrase, âthe blind leading the blind.â Each and every minute, individuals who are not qualified to speak about a subject provide advice to the masses via social media platforms. Even worse, each and every minute, someone takes their diatribe at face value. This unhappiness becomes evident to co-workers, clients, friends and loved ones and further isolates oneâs ability to achieve what they wish to. Itâs no secret that the overwhelming majority of human beings see how little they can do as opposed to propelling their ability to learn and seeking new avenues to teach them imperative skills. Domestic Violence Victims Are Gaining New Rights at Work Kristen Paruginog held two jobs during the four years she was in an abusive relationship, but neither offered a respite from her tumultuous home life. Paruginogâs abuser called her office constantly and sent harassing text messages if she didnât pick up the phone. Once, he showed up unannounced, locked her in his car, and drove off in the middle of the day. âThe entire office knew I was the girl with the abusive boyfriend,â she says. âThatâs what I was known for.â If Paruginogâs employer had a policy for handling domestic violence, or any victim resources, no one told her about them. Except for one brief, uncomfortable conversation with a supervisor â" prompted by her then-partnerâs arrest on work property â" the abuse never even came up. Much has changed in the years since Paruginog left that job, and that boyfriend. On Monday, New York City mayor Bill De Blasio signed a bill expanding the cityâs paid sick leave laws to include âsafe timeâ for domestic violence. It joins cities like San Francisco and Minneapolis, and states like California and Washington, that guarantee paid time off for victims to meet with law enforcement, move away from an abuser, and arrange for other potentially life-saving services. The New York bill is one of the most progressive laws to date, extending protections to victims of sexual assault, and stalking. A 2017 survey from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans found that about 42% of U.S. employers donât offer paid domestic violence leave, and another 19% said theyâre ânot sureâ if they would cover it. That means more than half of U.S. employers donât guarantee paid safe time, or havenât formalized it into company policy. Itâs not that companies are against giving employees time off for domestic violence services, experts say. By and large, if an employer has paid sick leave, theyâll let workers use it for âsafe time.â But domestic violence is inherently isolating â" unless a company is facing an incident directly, itâs likely unaware of how these situations impact its workers. âThe sad reason some companies start to think about it is because they had someone who died because of domestic violence,â says Kim Wells, executive director of the Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence, which helps companies create domestic leave policies and trainings. âMost have never thought about this as a preventative measure.â But more policies are slated to help victims in the upcoming year. The national push to federally mandate paid sick leave, led by a congressional bill re-introduced by Connecticut Representative Rosa DeLauro and Washington Senator Patty Murray in March, lists DV as a central tenet. But that kind of sweeping legislation is unlikely to pass, leaving reforms up to cities and states. In 2018, Washington and Nevada will join six other states with domestic violence policies on the books (Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Oregon, and Vermont). As more of these policies roll out, advocates say, the roughly 1.3 million American women who experience domestic violence annually will have an easier time getting back on their feet. Victims of âsevere intimate partner violenceâ lose the equivalent of more than 32,000 full-time jobs each year as a direct result of the abuse, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Paid leave gives them the time and space to turn their lives around without worrying if their jobs are at stake. Seabrook, general counsel of the Washington, D.C. nonprofit, Futures Without Violence. âIf a survivor knows sheâs supported in her workplace, and has the ability to take time off to go to the hospital, get a restraining order, and do whatever else she needs to, sheâs going to be a better, more productive worker.â For now, there are plenty of kinks to iron out. Laws vary by locality, so many employer policies that do exist are clunky and convoluted. For example, some companies with multiple locations specify that only employees in certain locations are guaranteed domestic violence leave, or allude to laws that âmay provide time awayâ for domestic violence victims. For states that donât have domestic violence policies on the books, particularly those with disproportionately high rates of domestic violence, like Tennessee and Louisiana, this further muddles what resources are available for victims of abuse. Disclosure is another gray area. While most safe time laws, like their sick leave counterparts, prohibit companies from requiring employees to disclose the reason for absence, they do allow companies to ask for a note from a medical provider to prove there is a valid reason for the leave â" a barrier some victims, who may be too embarrassed or scared to talk to a doctor, arenât willing to cross. Still, itâs clear workplace complacency is changing. An outpouring of support for victims of assault, instigated recently by reports of alleged abuse from Harvey Weinstein, Bill OâReilly, and Roger Ailes, and underscored by stories shared through hashtags like #metoo, have sparked a national conversation about how powerful men manipulate, subjugate, and harass women. Soon, advocates say, this could be the catalyst for national change. âThe workplace should be a community of support, and intervention,â Seabrook says. âThe law thatâs enacted is the floor. We encourage employers to be the ceiling.â
